Fabian's Take
CPO & Chief AI Officer
"Gemini surprised me. Prompted right, it's a very good intellectual sparring partner, and it's the one I reach for when I need to interpret an image, write a prompt for another image generator, or generate images and videos directly. The custom Gems are what won me over — I used a set of them to plan, specify, and design a whole professional app, and over 200 tickets came out of that workflow. It does ask for effort up front, so if you want an assistant that just works from a lazy prompt, this isn't the one for you."
Full Review
Gemini is a genuinely good AI model that gets less credit than it deserves. It rewards good prompting more than most models do. Once you learn how to work with it, the results are excellent.
Intellectual sparring partner
This is where Gemini is at its best. When you need to think through a hard problem — strategy, product design, business logic — it’s an exceptionally good sparring partner. It challenges your assumptions, offers other angles, and helps you pressure-test ideas in a way that actually feels collaborative.
Visual capabilities
Gemini is strong across modalities:
- Image interpretation: feed it screenshots, diagrams, or photos and you get back detailed, useful analysis
- Image generation prompts: it’s very good at writing precise prompts for other image generators
- Direct image and video generation: Gemini can make images and videos natively, so you don’t always have to leave the tool
Custom Gems
Custom Gems are Gemini’s most underrated feature. You can build specialized assistants tuned to a specific task or context. I used a set of them to plan, specify, and design a whole professional application, from the high-level architecture down to individual features, and over 200 tickets came out of that workflow.
If you manage product development, this is worth copying: build a Gem for your domain, feed it your context, and treat it as a planning partner.
Google Workspace integration
Having AI directly in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides pays off in day-to-day work. The 1 million token context window is the largest around, which makes it good for chewing through very long documents.
Who should use Gemini
Anyone who wants an AI thinking partner, works with visual content, or needs to plan complex projects. The custom Gems workflow alone earns back the Advanced plan. Just budget some time to learn how to prompt it well.
