Fabian's Take

CPO & Chief AI Officer

"I used to experiment with Midjourney but never got more out of it than some playful edits. It's likely more suitable for design professionals who can invest the time in prompt craft. For non-designers, Nano Banana 2 or GPT-Image-2 are more approachable starting points."

Full review

Midjourney still produces a look other generators can’t quite replicate: a distinctive artistic aesthetic you recognize the moment you see it. But image generation has moved fast, and its lead has narrowed.

Still the most distinctive look

What separates Midjourney from competitors remains hard to articulate but immediately visible. Images have a unique blend of dreaminess and photorealism with better composition and more natural lighting. The V8.1 model brought major improvements: faster generation speeds, native HD (2K) output without upscaling, and improved prompt adherence.

What’s changed

The competition has caught up. Google’s Nano Banana 2 delivers physics-accurate photorealism with flawless text rendering. FLUX-2-Pro achieves Midjourney-level quality while being accessible via API. GPT-Image-2 offers precise editing and generation integrated directly into ChatGPT. Midjourney’s advantage is increasingly niche.

Built for people who invest in it

Midjourney rewards significant investment in prompt craft. Learning to write effective prompts with style references, lighting descriptions, and composition guidance dramatically improves results. This makes it powerful for design professionals but less accessible for casual users who just need a decent image quickly.

Pricing considerations

No free tier means you need to commit $10/month minimum. The Standard plan at $30/month is the sweet spot — but consider whether you’ll use it enough to justify the cost when alternatives like Nano Banana 2 offer comparable quality at lower per-image costs.

Who should use Midjourney

Design professionals and creative workers who need distinctive, artistic imagery and are willing to invest in learning prompt craft. If you’re creating concept art, brand visuals, or creative projects where aesthetic uniqueness matters, Midjourney is still worth considering. For general-purpose image generation, other tools offer better value.
