Fabian's Take

CPO & Chief AI Officer

"The Audio Overview feature genuinely surprised me. Upload your research and it generates a natural-sounding podcast between two hosts talking through your content. I keep coming back to it when I need to actually absorb something dense rather than just skim it."

Full Review

NotebookLM is one of Google’s best AI products, and it’s largely free. The concept is simple: upload your sources, and NotebookLM becomes an AI assistant that’s grounded specifically in those sources — not the general internet.

Audio overview

The feature that put NotebookLM on the map is Audio Overview. Upload a research paper, a business report, or even a book chapter, and it generates a 10-15 minute podcast-style discussion between two AI hosts. They explain concepts, debate implications, and make the content genuinely engaging.

I expected a gimmick and it isn’t one. I use it regularly to:

  • Process long research papers during my commute
  • Create audio summaries of meeting notes for my team
  • Turn complex documentation into accessible overviews

Grounded in your sources

Unlike ChatGPT or Claude, NotebookLM only answers based on the sources you provide. That means:

  • Much lower hallucination risk
  • Answers are always traceable to specific passages
  • You control exactly what knowledge the AI has

Who should use NotebookLM

Researchers, students, knowledge workers, anyone who processes large amounts of text and wants to interact with it more efficiently. The fact that it’s free makes it an easy recommendation. Start with Audio Overview; it’ll sell you on the rest.
