Fabian's Take
"I've tested it, and interestingly it has caught up with the frontier in many respects. If you use Grok a lot, it's great to have this built in."
Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is xAI’s image model since 7 August 2026. In the Grok apps it’s the “Quality Mode” of Grok Imagine; developers reach it through the xAI API at 4 cents per image. The earlier version is still offered at a lower price.
Caught up
The first Grok Imagine was hit-or-miss. Version 2.0 is a different story: in my tests it has caught up with the frontier image models in many respects. That matters most if Grok is already where you work. You get a good image model right there, without copying prompts into another tool.
It also gives you more control than the first version: 1K or 2K resolution, a quality setting, a range of aspect ratios, and editing from up to five source images. What it doesn’t offer yet is 4K output.
The Verdict
Best for: People who use Grok or X a lot and want good images without switching tools.
