Claude Fable 5

Anthropic's frontier model — exceptional for complex, long-running agentic work, and a specialist's tool rather than a daily driver. Back in general access since July 2026 after a brief government-ordered pause.

Included in Claude Pro/Max/Team plans for now; otherwise usage-based at API rates ($10/M in, $50/M out)

At a Glance

Pros

  • + The most capable model I've worked with for genuinely hard, multi-step problems
  • + Sustains long autonomous runs in agentic setups like Claude Code without losing the thread
  • + Rewards good context dramatically — give it real knowledge about your situation and the output quality jumps

Cons

  • Eats through token limits fast — casual use can exhaust your quota with nothing to show for it
  • Overkill for everyday tasks — the standard Claude models handle those better per token
  • Slower per response than Opus, and its safety filters still over-block some legitimate work
  • Requires 30-day data retention with no zero-retention option — a blocker for some regulated work

Best for: Experienced practitioners running complex, long-horizon agentic work with a good harness and rich context

Fabian's Take

CPO & Chief AI Officer

"Five stars, with a warning label. It's back after a brief government-ordered pause in June, and in experienced hands on the right problems it's remarkable — I use it to plan, audit, and think through hard problems, then route everything else to cheaper models. Everyone else will burn through their token limit with nothing to show for it. A specialist's tool, not a daily driver."

Full review

Claude Fable 5 is Anthropic’s frontier model, and it’s the first tool on this site where my five-star rating comes with a warning label: most readers shouldn’t reach for it yet. It went through a strange first month, pulled from public access for nearly three weeks under a US government order and then restored on the first of July, but that’s behind it now. It’s available again, and everything below reflects working with it before and since.

Let me explain the rating first, then the warning.

Why five stars

On the problems it’s built for — complex analysis, long autonomous coding sessions, multi-step agentic work where the model has to plan, act, check its own results, and keep going — Fable 5 is the strongest model I’ve used. Where earlier models would lose the plot twenty minutes into an autonomous run, Fable keeps the whole task in view. I had it audit and overhaul this very website in a single session: codebase review, content fixes, config changes, the lot. That’s not a benchmark, it’s a workday. Working with it on hard business problems feels less like using software and more like having a whole bench of experts on call, none of whom forget a detail you mentioned an hour ago.

Why the warning label

Here’s the catch, and it’s a big one: Fable 5 only pays off when two things are true.

First, you need to be an experienced user. This model rewards people who know how to scope a task, supply context, and judge output. If you’re still at the “type a question, hope for the best” stage, Fable will happily burn through your entire token limit on a poorly framed task and hand you nothing usable. The standard Claude models are more forgiving, faster, and cheaper for everyday work — use those.

Second, the task has to deserve it. Drafting an email with Fable 5 is like commuting in a race car. It works, but you’re paying for capability you’re not using, and the fuel bill is real.

Availability and cost

Fable 5 is available again after its June pause — Anthropic tells the story of the shutdown and return in its own announcement. For now it’s bundled into the paid subscription plans, Pro, Max, and Team, so you can use it up to a share of your weekly allowance without a separate bill. Anthropic has said that’s temporary, though, and before long it moves to usage-based billing at full API rates, which are double what Opus costs. Two more things to know before you commit: the safety filters can still block legitimate work near sensitive topics, and the model requires 30-day data retention with no zero-retention option, which rules it out for some regulated work.

The bigger lesson

There’s a pattern here that goes beyond this one model: the more capable these models become, the more the bottleneck shifts to you — your harness and your context. A frontier model with no knowledge of your company, your codebase, or your goals is still the brilliant new hire who knows nothing about your business. Fable 5 makes that gap more expensive, not smaller. I’ve written about what a model this capable is actually for, and who it leaves behind; the short version is that everyone can rent the expert team now, and the only scarce thing left is knowing how to run it. If you want the payoff, invest in persistent context and project memory and a working setup like Claude Code before you reach for the biggest model on the shelf.

Who should use it

Practitioners who already run agentic workflows, have real context infrastructure in place, and regularly hit the ceiling of the standard models.

Who should look elsewhere

Everyone else, for now. Start with Claude on a Pro plan, learn the fundamentals, build your context. Fable 5 will still be here when you’re ready for it.
